What to look for in eco-friendly merchandise
“Eco” can mean many things, so ask what makes a product sustainable. These are the common signs.
- Recycled content: products made from recycled plastic (often called rPET), recycled paper or recycled fibres reduce the demand for new raw materials.
- Renewable materials: bamboo and natural wood regrow quickly, and cotton from organic sources avoids certain chemicals.
- Durability: a product that lasts for years is greener than one used once. Reusable bottles and totes are good examples.
- Certifications: labels such as the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), FSC for paper and wood, GOTS or OEKO-TEX for textiles can back up claims. Ask us which certification applies to a specific product.
